Plaza of the Mind Interview with Vanessa Daou! Coming Soon!

I have been a huge fan of 'sultry electronica singer-songwriter' Vanessa Daou since her first solo release of Zipless back in 1995. I had seen an add for her record in an old issue of Mondo 2000 and thought that it looked promising so I picked it up and have been a fan ever since.

I sent Ms. Daou an invitation to participate in an interview for the Plaza of the Mind and she was gracious enough to accept! Stay tuned for the interview - Coming Soon!

PoTM Meeting Minutes

In attendance:

Kurt Weller
'Skip' VanderDutch
'Scoop' VanderDutch
'Script' VanderDutch
Dean 'Uncut Deck' Bodbeil
Bobby 'Words' VanderDutch

Plaza of the Mind Quarterly Meeting Transcript:

Kurt: It has come to my attention that the Clustrmap for the new 'Deadline' Bob strip only has two dots on it - one in the Pacific Northwest, one in Texas.

Scoop: Yes sir.

Kurt: I don't know how I feel about those two audiences...

Bobby: You might want to rephrase that Mr. Weller.

Kurt: I don't know if I want to... uh... limit my readership to those two... uh... exceptional places... at this point.

Bobby: Sounds better sir.

Kurt: Any ideas?

Scoop: I showed the strip to a couple of teenage females this morning sir.

Kurt: And?

Scoop: They hated it sir, they are 'grossed out' by the character an they don't really seem to care about the mystery part of the strip.

Kurt: Anyone else?

Bobby: I talked to Bob over at Cussavco and he stated that the first round o…

Plaza of the Mind Album Cover Analysis Series 0001 - The Yellow and Black Attack

I never understood exactly what Stryper was trying to say with this or, really, any of their album covers. This one, however, seems to suggest that the hand of Jehovah is guiding a batch of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles at the Earth just after it has been occupied by the message of Stryper. (I base this on the fact that all of the continents appear in yellow and black - the color of Stryper - much the same way that they label a state either red or blue on news reports).

Why is Jehovah so angry? Is he punishing the Earthlings with the very message that they thought would save them? Was Stryper really an agent of the Lord or were they 'Devils in Disguise' as some of the more austere would have had you believe?

Isaiah 53:5 (King James Version) But he was wounded for our transgressions,
he was bruised for our iniquities:
the chastisement of our peace was upon him;
and with his strypes [sic] we are healed.
Stryper had reportedly taken their name from this biblical verse. I am u…

Plaza of the Mind Guide to Free End of Summer Intertainment!

People often ask me 'what are you into these days? I find you quite interesting and I think that whatever Outside Channels you're intaking might scratch me where I itch.'

The following is a list of things that I have found particularly interesting this month [and all of them are FREE!]

Elle Bandita is an interesting young musician from Rotterdam:

If you like the song as much as I do you can download it for free from her official page:

Click on the pink banner that says 'The Game' [and Aloha if you want to check out her other stuff]
This might not be suitable for the kids under fifteen or sixteen...

Back in high school I prided myself for my Twitch Gaming skills. I liked shooters [the kids call them shmups these days - go figure] - fast paced, lots of explosions, etc.

I have not found a really great shooter since Bangai-O [though Ikaruga was solid] until yesterday when I stumbled upon Fraxy [the page is in Japanese but you can download the game…

Plaza of the Mind Interview Sited [TWICE] in Controversial New Essay!

Bob Dobbs

I was thrilled when I found out that the SubGenius author Modemac sited two of my interviews (POtM Interview with Greg Duffell) and (POtM Interview with Bob Dobbs Part One: The Real Deal) for a new article he has written for his SubGenius High Weirdness site.

Of course, this is a bit bittersweet as I have found himself in bad favor with Ivan Stang's Church of the SubGenius due to my association with Bob Dobbs and the article in question attempts to use my articles as ammunition against Bob Dobbs' sanity [quite unconvincingly I might add].

But, as has been said before, any press is good press, so I'll take this press. And seeing as how I found the link to the article at Bob Dobbs' own Fivebodied it's safe to assume he feels the same way.

'Deadline' Bob Now Has His Own Home!

Due to the size of the 'Deadline' Bob project, I have decided to give Bobbo his very own page!
This new home is more suited to Bob's tastes, it is clean and brisk and very very simple. To check it out go ahead and click on the above image, or [here].

Now that Page Six of 'Deadline' Bob MASTER of A n n A r b o r 1978 has been published I suppose that this would be a good time to begin a review of the major plot points of this series in order to clear up any confusion that might occur as the plot thickens.

First of all, a note on the style. The look of 'Deadline' Bob MASTER of A n n A r b o r 1978 is inspired by the Spanish and Latin American art of Fumetti, combined with the collage-style paintings of Rod Kierkegaard Jr. popularized by Heavy Metal magazine in the 1970s. This seemed the best choice for this Graphic Novelization in that the basic premise and execution of 'Deadline' Bob is built around a mystery that promises to be answered on Page Sixty Four and that the art of the Fumetti always suggested a much larger story than it actually displayed and was also limited by the constraints of the photograph in a way that the hand drawn comic strip was not. I thought it would be good to pursue this method i…

We Always Knew You Were Real

John Keel has written that the unexplained often takes the shape of the environment in which it is encountered. People in the 1800s would have seen angels, whereas people in the 1950s would have seen men from space. This is not to say that the supposed people from space aren't real - only that they may not necessarily be from space.

Why is the child so obsessed with the little man? Why do all cultures have their own form of fairy, brownie, wight, etc?

The child needs the little man and the same forces that make us see small zeppelins floating around our childhood ceilings and the talking beer steins sculpted into the shapes of men capture our money and our needs for Smurfs or Pocket Monsters or anything else smaller than us?

A cat was chasing a mouse in my backyard. Toying with it. I don't think I would do the same were I to meet a Smurf.

I am not talking about the American Smurfs - the sort of cartoon version of the European Smurf legend - I am talking about the Smurfs as po…
